How this course works

Three sessions a week, 40 to 50 minutes each, at the office terminal. Every item below is a checkbox saved in this browser (per device, like the Roadmap), so tick things off on the desktop and the phone separately. Each week pairs one BMC module with the terminal functions it uses, hands-on drills, short readings and something you build and keep (a chart, a monitor, a screen). A five-question self-check closes every week.

The eight weeks

Ground rules that save hours

Three habits to build by week 8

Habit 1

Morning loop in 10 minutes

WEI, WB, FXC, GLCO, ECO, TOP, then the Launchpad view you build in week 2.

Habit 2

Any question, one screen

Know which single function answers the question the desk asks: "what is the vol doing", "who holds this", "where is the curve", "what is priced for the Fed".

Habit 3

Options desk fluency

OMON, OVME, OSA, SKEW, GV, HIVG, VCA without thinking, on index, single name and ETF underlyings.

ETF library

The funds worth recognising on sight, grouped by what they do. Bloomberg ticker format is TICKER US Equity for US listings and CODE SP Equity for SGX. ER is the annual expense ratio in percent as last checked in September 2026 (funds cut fees often; the number on DES wins). AUM figures are rounded and only there to give a sense of size.

How to research any ETF on the terminal

  1. TICKER US Equity GO then DES: objective, index tracked, issuer, expense ratio, inception, structure (ETF, grantor trust, ETN) and the fund's own web page.
  2. HDS or the Holdings tab in DES: top holdings, weights, sector and country mix. MHD shows holdings over time.
  3. ETF GO: the ETF screener. Filter by asset class, region, issuer, expense ratio, AUM, flows. Best way to find "the cheapest EM debt ETF" or "every leveraged Nasdaq product".
  4. FSRC: fund search across ETFs and mutual funds when you know the theme but not the ticker.
  5. GP for price, COMP against the index it tracks (tracking difference), DVD for distributions, CACS for splits and name changes.
  6. FREP or the fund report page for a printable one-page fact sheet; NAV fields versus price tell you the premium or discount.
  7. Options on the ETF: OMON, and note that the liquid ones (SPY, QQQ, IWM, TLT, HYG, GLD, EEM, FXI) have options as deep as the index products.

Structures to recognise

Open-end ETF (1940 Act)

The normal case (IVV, VOO, AGG). Can reinvest dividends internally, lend securities, use derivatives within limits.

Unit investment trust

SPY, DIA (QQQ was one until it converted to an open-end fund in Dec 2025, which is when its fee fell to 0.18%). Must hold dividends as cash until paid, no securities lending, no optimisation. Slight cash drag; SPY's higher fee is history not structure.

Grantor trust

GLD, IAU, SLV, IBIT. Holds the physical asset or coin. Taxed as collectibles in the US; no income.

Commodity pool (K-1)

USO, UNG, DBC. Hold futures, roll monthly, issue a K-1 tax form. PDBC exists to avoid the K-1.

ETN

A bank note, not a fund: credit risk on the issuer. VXX (Barclays) is the famous one. Check DES for "Exchange Traded Note".

Leveraged and inverse

Daily reset. Hold for days, not months; path dependence erodes returns in choppy markets. TQQQ, SQQQ, SOXL, UVXY.

The firms behind the tickers

Global ETF assets passed US$21.9 trillion in April 2026 (ETFGI). The top three issuers hold about 59% of it. Knowing the house tells you what to expect from a fund: cost, structure, how it is marketed and who trades it.

Singapore-listed ETFs and their managers

SGX codeFundManagerER %What it is for

Sources checked Sep 2026: ETFGI press release (Apr 2026 assets), TradingView largest-ETF table (AUM and expense ratios), issuer pages, SGX product pages and The Kopi Notes SGX ETF list. Confirm any figure on DES before using it.

Function index

Every mnemonic used in the course, A to Z, with the week it first appears. Type the mnemonic and press GO. Most need a security loaded first (marked "sec").
